The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County provides recreation programs and services to individuals with special needs or disabilities, and their families, who reside within the boundaries of Member Agency communities.

SRACLC Recognizes Executive Director John Buckner on His Retirement

After more than 40 years in therapeutic recreation, including 36 years as Executive Director of the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County (SRACLC), John Buckner has announced his retirement.

John began his career in 1985 after earning his degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Iowa. On November 1, 1990, he became the Director of SRACLC. At that time, the agency operated from two rooms in the basement of the former Lincoln School in Mundelein, employed just three staff members, and served three member agencies.

Under John’s leadership, SRACLC grew into one of Illinois’ premier special recreation associations, expanding to eight member agencies and significantly increasing programs, services, partnerships, and community impact. He championed the development of many signature programs, including Active Adult, Counselor in Training, Birdie Buddies, Teens in Action, Show Stoppers, and We Serve. In 2001, he established the SRACLC Foundation, creating new opportunities to support participants through fundraising and community partnerships.

Throughout his career, John secured numerous grants and funding partnerships, advocated for legislative initiatives benefiting special recreation agencies statewide, and served in leadership positions with the Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section, IPRA, PDRMA, and other professional organizations. His dedication earned him numerous state recognitions, including the ITRS Distinguished Service Award and the ITRS Professional of the Year. Also, under John’s guidance, SRACLC received both national and state awards, including the National Gold Medal Award and multiple IPRA Outstanding Program and Special Event Awards.

John also guided SRACLC through significant challenges, including rebuilding after a devastating office fire and navigating major organizational changes, always leading with resilience, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to participants and families.

John’s greatest legacy is the thousands of individuals with disabilities whose lives have been enriched through the programs, opportunities, and inclusive communities he helped create. We thank John for his extraordinary leadership and unwavering dedication and wish him a healthy, happy, and well-deserved retirement.
